Himalayan glaciers are melting!

Lives of millions of people is threatened by melting Himalayan glaciers, announced researchers who conducted the most comprehensive analysis of the effects of climate change in this region.

The report was presented at the UN climate conference taking place these days in Durban. This is the first scientific research documenting the melting glaciers in the Himalayas.

The researchers’ findings are alarming: in the last 30 years, Nepal’s glaciers have shrunk by 21% and those in Bhutan by 22%. All the 10 glaciers in the region were studied melt, research shows, recorded an acceleration in the rate of melting between 2002 and 2005.

Scientists say climate change in the Himalayas could be devastating because the region is a source of food and energy to 1.3 billion people living in river basins downstream. If the glaciers melt, this will lead to rivers drying plays an essential role in their lives.
