Did you know?
That African Gray Parrot has the reputation of being the best talker of all species of parrot? They can only imitate speech, but also mimic a human voice. They also imitate sounds with incredible accuracy, from dripping from a faucet until construction equipment. Caregivers should be careful to pronounce any word you do not want the birds to learn, as they seem to have a special talent to learn only what they should not!
The African Gray Parrot or Yaco has a total length of 30-35 cm, like the size of a medium Amazon parrot. There are two subspecies, the Congo African Gray Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) that is larger; and the Timneh African Gray Parrot (Psittacus erithacus Timneh), which is smaller. Plumage color is several shades of gray, except for the tail has a striking crimson or brown, depending on the subspecies. The iris of adults is pale yellow, brown for juveniles. The bill is black or Timnehs partly horn colored. Is hooked like most parrots and is extremely powerful. A clutch typically consists of 2 to 4 eggs which are incubated by the female alone, while the male provides food while she sits on the eggs. Once the chicks hatch, both parents care for them. They feed primarily on nuts and fruits, supplemented with shoots and leaves.
